I used to pray for times like this 🫡🤌🏾✨ Y’all, I remember when I was working on @freestylelovesupreme with @beowulfboritt back in 2021. B would give me drafts to do and I always would start in CAD (which I was formerly trained in), he works in Vectorworks. Not knowing a lick of anything about it, I would finish the draft in CAD, save as a DWG, transfer to a VWX, and PRAY that it transferred everything properly. Didn’t know a layer from a class, no workspace templates, and plenty of “I forgot to automatically save the file” 😭🤌🏾! Just trial and error. Now, 4 years later, I have a Core Associate Certification from VWXU 😗🧎🏾Passed with an 88%! (And yes, I watched those boring class videos on the website). My time @delshakes was fun ♥️ Here’s some BTS, renders, storyboards, blah blah blah. Notes from a set designer: Usually, I’m on the left end, overviewing the process as an assistant/associate. But you know what this show taught me, fr? Working outdoors is different. The Public has a whole thing running with it comes to outdoor theatre, I thought it was the same everywhere but BOY WAS I UNDER THE WRONG IMPRESSION (and that’s no shade). I was privileged to the fact that some of the elements needed to do an outdoor production were already provided. For example, a scene shop and a scenic painter. However, with a small theater like DSF, we started completely from scratch. Bottom line: No stage, no lights, no sound. Just woods. Of course, there were a million and one cuts, but I swear, the ART OF IMPERMANENCE, THE ART OF LETTING GO, THE EPHEMERALITY OF IT ALL, it was eye-opening. Being truthful, my original design couldn’t be done. It was devastating at first. It’s over-budget, didn’t have enough hands to build in time, environmental constraints, if not this, then that — literally. Not every theater is a “yes and” theater, and that’s okay. Sometimes you will have to decipher between function and intentionality vs artistic integrity. THAT is where letting go comes in. The point is to get the message across. Communication. To be a vessel for further dialogue. Everything else is bluff. I was worried about semantics and necessities, but sometimes, I don’t need all of that. Especially with Shakespeare. My professor said a while back, “Shakespeare didn’t have a set, do you need one?“ and I don’t know, I guess I’m now realizing what he meant by that. Amen to @s.andrew.watring tho! We did what needed to be done Anyways, it was cool. Met some dope folks. Actors were incredible! Crew was fabulous! Learned a ton! Conceptual Paint Renderings 14x17” for “The Myth of The Two Marcos” 💙 @oneill_center Listen, I ain’t the best painter lol, but I’m determined to get better at this. Funny enough, I left my iPad pencil at home so I legit had no choice but to paint and sketch everything during the fellowship. But what a treat it was to reconnect with my love of watercolor. LOVE photoshop and procreate as much as the next guy but there was something spiritual I rediscovered about free-painting and drawing. Felt like I was meeting an old friend 🫂🫶🏾! I love that @oanabotez techniques is now in my psyche. Every time I painted or drew something, I just kept telling myself “nobody’s here judge you” “perfection does not exist” “free yourself”! You don’t understand, the countless number of actors, playwrights, directors, designers, dramaturges who have come from the place run deep, all inspiring. The connections I made here will carry wayyyyyyy beyond this point and I hope that this just the beginning of something truly glorious to come. For the first day of summer (and for the first time), I went to the beach at 5:30 in the morning to read these two beautiful scripts by @avahrobinett & @sagenimitchell 🫂 Both were incredible works and I hope nothing but the best for these two on their playwright journey. Also with that, summer reading is in full effect 🫡🤓! This 90°+ weather is ludicrous but ayyy at least I’m at the beach 🏝️ ALSO ummmmm, there’s a beach down the hill of the O’Neill?!? HELLO LIKE I will in fact be there everyday while I’m here lol. Being on a completely empty beach is an unmatched experience. Highly recommend. I’ve also found this new stillness for reading plays that I didn’t have before. A calmness - How lovely a thing to hold on to 🫂! New core memories unlocked. Have you been reading this summer?
