2025 WRAPPED! And I did what I said I was gonna do. Dream Bigger 🫡❣️Always a student of the craft. If 2025 taught me everything, THE BRAVEST THING YOU CAN DO IS ASK FOR HELP. The collaborators I came across this year that helped me in ways that cannot be explained. Some BIG, some small, some unknown — it’s been felt and received. Man I wish I gave myself more grace. I realized that I cannot do this theater thing all by myself. It’s really a machine of sorts that can consume the essence of what you’re seeking out to make. I definitely made a ton of mistakes, missteps, and plenty of errors along the way last year, believe me. Definitely took some Ls, but my Ws outweigh. 2025 I learned that in theater, there’s no art without business AND YOU MUST KNOW THE BUSINESS. Be that as it may, I’m still a human being. A student. Learning. Trying. Still figuring it out 🤷🏾‍♂️. But☝🏾it was suggested a long time that I take the road less traveled to get where I need to go and I’m here to say I am exactly where I’m suppose to be. Many things aligned perfectly for the future ahead. SOOOOO MANY SEEDS WERE PLANTED LAST YEAR 🫂🫰🏾❤️ and that was worth it all. I cannot wait to see how those seeds will blossom 🌼! I used to pray for times like this 🫡🤌🏾✨ Y’all, I remember when I was working on @freestylelovesupreme with @beowulfboritt back in 2021. B would give me drafts to do and I always would start in CAD (which I was formerly trained in), he works in Vectorworks. Not knowing a lick of anything about it, I would finish the draft in CAD, save as a DWG, transfer to a VWX, and PRAY that it transferred everything properly. Didn’t know a layer from a class, no workspace templates, and plenty of “I forgot to automatically save the file” 😭🤌🏾! Just trial and error. Now, 4 years later, I have a Core Associate Certification from VWXU 😗🧎🏾Passed with an 88%! (And yes, I watched those boring class videos on the website). My time @delshakes was fun ♥️ Here’s some BTS, renders, storyboards, blah blah blah. Notes from a set designer: Usually, I’m on the left end, overviewing the process as an assistant/associate. But you know what this show taught me, fr? Working outdoors is different. The Public has a whole thing running with it comes to outdoor theatre, I thought it was the same everywhere but BOY WAS I UNDER THE WRONG IMPRESSION (and that’s no shade). I was privileged to the fact that some of the elements needed to do an outdoor production were already provided. For example, a scene shop and a scenic painter. However, with a small theater like DSF, we started completely from scratch. Bottom line: No stage, no lights, no sound. Just woods. Of course, there were a million and one cuts, but I swear, the ART OF IMPERMANENCE, THE ART OF LETTING GO, THE EPHEMERALITY OF IT ALL, it was eye-opening. Being truthful, my original design couldn’t be done. It was devastating at first. It’s over-budget, didn’t have enough hands to build in time, environmental constraints, if not this, then that — literally. Not every theater is a “yes and” theater, and that’s okay. Sometimes you will have to decipher between function and intentionality vs artistic integrity. THAT is where letting go comes in. The point is to get the message across. Communication. To be a vessel for further dialogue. Everything else is bluff. I was worried about semantics and necessities, but sometimes, I don’t need all of that. Especially with Shakespeare. My professor said a while back, “Shakespeare didn’t have a set, do you need one?“ and I don’t know, I guess I’m now realizing what he meant by that. Amen to @s.andrew.watring tho! We did what needed to be done Anyways, it was cool. Met some dope folks. Actors were incredible! Crew was fabulous! Learned a ton! Conceptual Paint Renderings 14x17” for “The Myth of The Two Marcos” 💙 @oneill_center Listen, I ain’t the best painter lol, but I’m determined to get better at this. Funny enough, I left my iPad pencil at home so I legit had no choice but to paint and sketch everything during the fellowship. But what a treat it was to reconnect with my love of watercolor. LOVE photoshop and procreate as much as the next guy but there was something spiritual I rediscovered about free-painting and drawing. Felt like I was meeting an old friend 🫂🫶🏾! I love that @oanabotez techniques is now in my psyche. Every time I painted or drew something, I just kept telling myself “nobody’s here judge you” “perfection does not exist” “free yourself”! Also me sharing this is part of that. Anyways Shoutout to Tony for writing a beautiful coming-of-age piece ✨🫂!
