LIVE ART EXHIBITION: BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

Live Art Exhibition: Behind Closed Doors” is a division of the Live Art Experience* (conceived by Trey Gray) presented independently by the students of Design & Production, sponsored by the Artists of Color Organization at University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

The Live Art Experience is the reimagination of theatre and visual arts in a multidisciplinary, unconventional and immersive art museum. The purpose of these experiences are to tell varying stories with a goal for the audience to learn, heal, and change through uncomfortable societal conversations. This challenges individuals to look at the world at large through the medium of art from a new lens and spread an introspective process.

To the beautiful humans involved in this project, I’ll take you everywhere. We made art during a time of survival, we are the future, and we are proof the art will previal. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for seeing the vision through. Thank you for believing in me. Thank you for sharing a small piece of yourself with the world. I love all of you, I’ll never forget this experience." Romello Huins (Mell) - Creative Director

“Throughout life, we’ve all built an invisible mask as children to adults to protect who we truly are. But why? Who are we when no one is looking? What goes on once we close the doors? What are the real thoughts in the back of our minds? Society has become a huge cover-up of restrains and secrets, and it has torn us apart. It’s time to unveil the truth (for better or worse). What is the world behind closed doors?”

- Romello Huins

I want to be. FREE.

Artistic exploration and vulnerability can be transformative tools for breaking free of societal constraints. When we allow ourselves to delve deep into our creativity, push the boundaries, and challenge the status quo, we embark on a journey of self-discovery and liberation. It is through artistic expression that we give voice to our innermost thoughts and emotions, embracing our vulnerabilities and laying bare our authentic selves. By embracing vulnerability, we break free from societal expectations that dictate who we should be and how we should conform. Art becomes a powerful medium through which we can question, challenge, and redefine societal norms, ultimately paving the way for personal growth, authenticity, and a more expansive and inclusive world.

“Behind Closed Doors” explored the secrets and truths of 12 students in the School of Design & Production. “Who we thought we were”, “Who we are now”, & “Who we want to be.”

The Cube: A Liberating Visual Manifestation

Innovation knows no bounds, as evidenced with this masterpiece, "The Cube" or, as we affectionately call it, the "Membrane." This collaborative structure stands as a testament to the power of unity, creativity, and the liberation of self-expression. Created through the joint efforts of all 12 brilliant artists, The Cube serves as a visual representation of the release of control. It boldly encapsulates the essence of our collective thoughts, which are now heard out loud and presented raw to the world. Within its unique form, there lies no place for hiding from our truths any longer. Infused with individual artistic styles and diverse perspectives, The Cube emerges as an architectural marvel that commands attention. With its polished surfaces and intricate design, it stands tall and resolute, demanding viewers to contemplate and immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of emotions that it embodies.
